Lettering from the road
Even in my every day existence there are so many signs, posters, letters everywhere that attract my attention. When I travel, that increases 100 fold as everything is new, interesting, kitsch and, in this case, a great sample of Americana. I drove over 4,000 miles in 24 days from Kansas through the northern southwest (Utah) to California and back along much of Route 66 through Arizona and New Mexico, and I took photos of everything. Here are just a few with letters that amuse me for one reason or another, from Kansas to LA and back.
My first gas stop heading west was Russell, Kansas.
The white on blue sign between the posts says:
Visit Russell

Bob Dole's

No Name, Colorado.

Really.

The new sign for the fabulous Neon Boneyard Park (left), the home of discarded neon and electric Las Vegas signs. Signs in the park and a few restored signs from Fremont Street below. Of course volumes would not cover all the Vegas signage, so just a few oldies here.
All of the National Parks I visited had postcards and prints of these lovely old WPA promotional posters (above)

Right and below: Newspaper rock petroglyphs at Petrified Forest National Monument

Had to throw in this great postcard (left).
Love Muffin Cafe, Moab Utah. Menu below.
All of the signage in the National Parks had some similarity: the rock stands and the shield, but the lettering varied.
Thunderbird Restaurant, Home of the Ho-made pies.
Mt. Carmel Junction, UT.

Flagstaff, Arizona below (including Grand Canyon Cafe and street signs).
Mule crossing at the Grand Canyon of course.
Grants, New Mexico
Classical Gas Museum, Embudo, NM (below)
Cimmaron and then Taos, New Mexico.

Then on to Dodge City, Kansas (below) and home.

Holbrook kitsch above and below.
